Or perhaps you’ve wondered how we decide what will be hanging on our racks months from now.

The answer is that fashion works much further ahead than most people realise. 

While you’re deciding what to wear this weekend, we’re often already thinking about what you’ll want to wear next season, and sometimes even beyond that.

In fact, here’s what that looks like in real time.

Right now, we’re receiving Spring 2026 fashion at Innocence & Attitude. Our buying for Summer and Autumn 2027 is already complete, and we’re about to start buying for Winter 2027.

Yep, while Spring is only just arriving in the boutique, we’re already thinking about next Winter!

In fashion, we’re almost always two seasons ahead.

It Starts Months Before You See It

Behind every new arrival at I&A is a buying process that begins long before that piece reaches the boutique.

Fashion brands work seasonally, releasing ranges and collections ahead of time for retailers to view and order. That means buying for Spring and Summer can be happening while the weather outside still feels decidedly Wintry.

Depending on the brand and collection, we may be looking at ranges several months before they actually arrive in store.

This is where we have to put our forecasting hats on.

What colours are coming through? What shapes are changing? What fabrics will work for our climate? What trends have staying power, and which ones probably aren't right for our customers?

Because buying isn't simply about choosing what we like.

It's about choosing what we think you'll love.

Buying for Our Customers

One of the biggest advantages of shopping with an independent boutique is that the range has been personally selected.

We know our customers. We know the styles you come back for, the pieces you love wearing, the fits that work and the things you've been asking us to find.

When we're buying a new season, all of that comes with us.

Of course, we want to bring you something fresh. Fashion should be fun, and there's nothing quite like finding a new colour, print or style that you wouldn't normally have chosen and absolutely loving it.

But we also want our collections to feel wearable.

There is a big difference between something looking fabulous in a buying room and imagining how it will work in real life. Whether that's for work, weekends, holidays, events or simply something that makes you feel great when you put it on.

And then… We Wait!

Once the buying is done and the orders are placed, those pieces don't immediately appear at our door.

There can be months between ordering a collection and seeing it arrive.

Which makes delivery day a little bit like Christmas for us too!

By the time those boxes arrive, we've often moved through an entire season since we first saw the range. Opening them brings back all those little "Ohhh, I remember this!" moments, followed very quickly by deciding where everything will go and what we can't wait to show you.

Why Does New-Season Fashion Arrive So Early?

This is also why fashion seasons can sometimes feel slightly ahead of the weather.

Spring collections begin arriving while there are still cold days. Summer pieces appear before Summer officially begins. Autumn starts creeping onto the racks while we're still enjoying sunshine.

Retail needs to be ready for the season before you need it.

It also means you have time to start building your wardrobe gradually rather than suddenly needing something for the first hot day, an upcoming holiday or an event and discovering you've left it too late.

The Next Season Is Never Far Away

One of the funny things about working in fashion is that you're always living in two seasons at once.

We're enjoying the beautiful new arrivals landing in the boutique now while also thinking ahead to what's coming next.

It's a constant cycle of discovering, planning, ordering, waiting, and finally sharing those pieces with you.

So next time you walk into I&A and see a rack filled with brand-new arrivals, know that those pieces have probably been on quite a journey before reaching Swan Hill.

And chances are, while you're browsing them, we're already thinking about what you're going to be wearing next.
